Forest Forces | A sit down with Steve

Our ‘Forest Forces’ programme is designed to support local Veterans to lead a more healthy and connected life. We aim to tackle social isolation by providing a variety of regular activities and events that brings veterans together from different backgrounds and armed forces constituents. From coffee mornings, comedy nights and day trips, we work with our veterans to come up with different initiatives that everyone will enjoy.

In partnership with the EFL Trust we are also a part of the Tackling Loneliness Together programme which allows us to continue to support our elderly participants and fans across the community during these difficult times.

We caught up with Veteran, Steve Rowe to find what Forest Forces means to him…

How long have you been coming to Forest Forces?
It must be around 18 months or so I believe.

Why did you first get involved in Forest Forces?
I am a member of the Nottingham and Rushcliffe Armed Forces veterans Breakfast Club and there are several of us who first heard about it through this.

What sort of activities and events have you done with Forest Forces?
I have attended numerous events including the visit to Derby County FC, escorted visits to Nottingham Forest FC City ground with John McGovern and Frank Clarke and the penalty shoot-out before the pitch was ripped up.

Have you made any new friends from Forest Forces?
I have made some new friends and caught up with a couple of old RAF ones who I have not seen for many years.

What do you enjoy most about the programme?
It is great to see everyone and have a chat over a coffee and a cake. I enjoy the fact that Nottingham Forest actually take the time and effort to provide this for veteran members of Her Majesty’s Armed Forces. The staff of Forest Forces should be very proud of what they have achieved and how they treat us all.

During Covid-19 have you still had support from the Forest Forces programme?
I am very lucky as I am one of the youngest who attends and I have a fairly active work and social life. I mentioned to Danielle about my Photographic and Digital Images business and before I could say anything, she offered to help spread the word in order to drum up some more business if possible. This was an incredible gesture as my business has all but collapsed over the lockdown period. My photography work came to an abrupt halt due to the restrictions in place, so I had to find another source of revenue. During the lockdown I began to create digital images through an Ipad app and now have a brand-new website which showcases both my photographic and digital images.
