Forest Forces on parade at Nottingham Castle
At the end of August, we took the Forest Forces veterans out on a day trip to the historic Nottingham Castle. The group was led by regular Forest Forces participant, Gary Crosby, who guided the veterans around the castle exploring all the fantastic sights and views of the renowned attraction, which has recently had a 30-million-pound revamp.
The Forest Forces programme, aims to tackle loneliness and self-isolation in the older generation prides itself on being able to provide a variety of events and activities regularly for veterans. These events can bring people together from different backgrounds and communities, and allows participants to meet new and old friends.
The recent trip to Nottingham Castle is a great example of the Forest Forces programme in action, with all veterans enjoying an insightful and entertaining trip whilst learning some interesting facts about the city – many of which are Nottingham born and bred.
The veterans were keen to visit the Castle to explore the history and additional exhibitions on display. They were able to discover the thrilling tales of Robin Hood, view historic caves, marvel at statues and see the carefully curated art collections and exhibitions. However, this wouldn’t have been the tour it was without the excellent and knowledgeable tour guide Gary – one of valued Forest Forces members and a Walking Football prodigy.
After walking around the castle grounds, our veterans were in luck as they ended up at the ice cream van and they indulged in a tasty ice cream, which went down well!
Danielle Grimshaw, Nottingham Forest Community Trust Programmes Coordinator, said “It was a pleasure to spend another great day out with the veterans at Nottingham Castle!”
Danielle continued, “Everyone was laughing and smiling and taking in the sights, which is exactly what we wanted to achieve and we’re looking forward to organising the next day trip in the future.”
As a trust, we take great pride in providing opportunities for veterans and we enjoy investing our time to do so. If you want to find out more information, please contact us email@example.com
