Nottingham Forest Community Trust have recently started a new initiative to engage with Veteran’s from the local community. We are looking to develop a range of activities through the ‘Forest Forces’ programme to support our Veteran’s. We held our first Forest Forces event at the end of last month, which was a Breakfast morning and tour of The City Ground with NFFC legend John McGovern. The morning was a great success therefore, we are holding another coffee morning here at The City Ground on Friday 22nd February.

We currently run weekly walking football sessions for over 50’s at The Forest Sports Zone, this is something we are pushing for more Veteran’s to get involved in. Following the first Forest Forces event Sam Mitchell 59, a local Veteran heard about our Walking Football sessions and thought it sounded like something he would like to participate in.

We visited Sam at his third session to see how he was getting on.

Why did you attend our Walking Football session?

“I attended the Forest Forces breakfast morning, this is where I heard about the walking football sessions. It is something I have wanted to do for ages however, I didn’t know anywhere that did it.”

What made you come back after your first session?

“It’s brilliant, absolutely brilliant. This week is my third session and I’ve really enjoyed every single one. I thought it would be hard, the first session I did 3.2 miles and the second one I did 4.2 miles. However, you don’t realise how much exercise you’re doing when you are enjoying yourself.

What is your favourite part of a session?

“Scoring goals!”

Would you recommend it to other Veteran’s?

“Absolutely! I have bought two of my friends along today from my old Army unit because it’s so good. Football is a massive part of the Armed Forces, and it would be great to get a Veteran’s team together.”

How important is it for organisations such as ourselves to help support local Veterans?

“Massively, we’re crying out for things such as breakfast mornings and walking football sessions. It is very important and there is definitely a gap for it in the community. The Forest Forces event I attended was great, I’m a Leeds fan so it was really good walking around the stadium with John McGovern.”
