Our free Premier League Girls sessions take place all over Nottinghamshire every week, they are open to ages 11+ for players of all abilities and skill levels. Although these sessions can are fun and relaxed, for certain participants who want to progress in the game we are able to create pathways with local clubs to provide long-term participation opportunities, and for the elite players, this is a route into our very own Regional Talent Club (RTC).
This past year we have had great success with our Premier League Girls programme, with many participants going on to play football outside of school and one of our school’s teams reaching the Nottinghamshire County Cup Final as well as progressing into the Quarter Finals of the National Schools FA Cup!
Over the last year we have seen:
- 331 girls attend our session across 12 satellites
- 189 of these girls were new to football
- 4 of the participants from our girls programme have progressed into our FA Girls England Talent Pathway.
There have been some great success stories throughout the year such as the following;
Lailah is an 11 year-old girl from the Fernwood School who had fallen out of love with football, until her father encouraged her to attend one of our Premier League Girls sessions held weekly at her school. Since she first came to the session she continued to come back every week, saying “The way Forest coach is great, it’s fun and hard but it’s challenging, I like it. It’s made me want to think about playing for a team, all the sports I’ve played before I have never stuck to, but I think I will football.” Lailah’s favourite part of the session is working with our coach Dante, she explained “I played as a striker but the sessions and Dante helped me realise I play better in defence, from this he helped me strengthen my defensive skills such as staying in position. I also think I am now better at tackling than before.”
Sylvie is a year 11 pupil at the South Wolds Academy in Keyworth, she has been attending our sessions ever since her first week in year 7, meaning she has been coming back to our sessions every week for 5 years! Sylvie said that her favourite thing about our programme is “the opportunity to play football” and she said that our coaches have really helped her. When we asked her how our coaches have helped she explained “They’re really supportive and even if they haven’t been coaching your session in a while they will always remember your name, which is really nice.”
Toot Hill School is a part of this initiative and we have seen some incredible success with them since the start of the programme. Their year 7 girls football team has more players wanting to join than ever before and amazingly this year they have managed to reach the Nottinghamshire County Cup Final as well as progressing into the Quarter Finals of the National Schools FA Cup! When we asked teacher and coach Miss Hall about the girls success, she expressed her gratitude towards our Premier League Girls coach, Dante, who runs the sessions for them, she explained “Dante builds strong relationships with the girls through engaging sessions that develop techniques and interest the girls. He always has clearly planned sessions with a theme beforehand but is willing to adapt them as needed. Dante is firm in his approach to ensure sessions run effectively. He is always punctual and well organised and speaks and behaves in an appropriate way for delivering to girls. Overall we have been really impressed with the session Dante has provided at Toot Hill.”
We are so happy to be supporting the development of female participation in football and we hope to continue to grow these stats going forward.
