Billy Warburton and Nathan Johnson began their journey with Nottingham Forest back in September 2013 when they joined as part of a Futsal & Education Scholarship programme for students aged 16-17. The programme allowed students who had just finished their GCSE studies an opportunity to continue their studies in a professional football club environment while training and competing in a national Futsal (a form of indoor 5-a-side football) League. Billy and Nathan both studied a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport & Excellence and over the 2 years demonstrated their knowledge of sport, desire to work hard and improve both as students and footballers.

Billy completed his 2 years of studying and walked away with a distinction profile. This allowed him to explore a number of different options such as a conventional route in to University, employment etc. but he opted for a further 3 years with Nottingham Forest Community Trust and joined our degree programme where he would study for a BSc (Hons) in Coaching, Business & Administration in partnership with the University of South Wales.

Nathan also completed his Futsal & Education Scholarship in the summer of 2015 and achieved a Distinction profile which allowed him to move onto the degree programme as well despite other options available to him such as employment and University elsewhere. Both Nathan and Billy as part of their studies so far on the degree programme have gained their FA Level 2 Football Coaching award and have their sights set on gaining their UEFA B licence in the future as they both now coach in a variety of roles both with Nottingham Forest Community Trust and externally.

Finally as part of their development as students and people they have both earned employment at our £1 million state of the art facility The Forest Sport Zone as ‘Forest Sport Zone Assistants’. Their roles involve maintaining the site and facilities, dealing with members of the public, organising bookings etc. Both Billy and Nathan have been able to progress into these roles due to their hard working attitudes, communication skills and willingness to learning.
