West Bridgford Girls finish runners up in the EFL Utilita Energy Girls Cup Regional Finals

Year eight students from The West Bridgford School finished as runners up in the Regional Finals of this seasons EFL Utilita Energy Girls cup, representing Nottingham Forest.

The girls won the opportunity to represent the Reds by winning our clubs finals in late 2021, and took on other clubs from the region at Powerleague in Derby, with this seasons Regional finals hosted by Derby County Community Trust.

Playing in a league format, the top four teams would then qualify for the days semi-finals, the West Bridgford girls finished fourth in the league stages, qualifying with victories over Derby County, Burton Albion, Birmingham City, Walsall, Mansfield Town and Coventry.

The biggest result of the day came in the semi-finals as the Reds took on West Bromwich Albion who’d won all nine of their league fixtures including a 5-2 win over Forest. Determined to upset the apple cart, the Reds edged past the Baggies 2-1 to face Shrewsbury Town in the final, who proved too strong and ended Forests journey in this seasons competition.

Despite heartbreak in the final, Rob Scullion, Sports Development Coordinator at West Bridgford School said “We’re all so proud of their efforts today, we knew we were going to come up against some good sides which we did, but for the girls – this experience is invaluable.

“For them to represent Forest is huge, there’s a lot of supporters within that group so when they were given the kit this morning, they were buzzing and eager to go out and do well.

“The girls are all consistent players already playing for the school team, but they’ll take a lot of confidence away from today, and being able to be guided by the coaches such as Dante helps them learn from others and take on new ideas.

“Girls football is still trying to get on a parr with boys football but competitions and opportunities such as this help that to grow and other students within our School have noticed their peers having this opportunity and already asking when and where they can play which is fantastic for us”

Dante Diriso, Nottingham Forest Community Trust head coach, added “The girls have showed a fantastic attitude all throughout the day, they’ll certainly take away knowledge that anything is possible when you work hard and focus – I’ve no doubt they’ll continue to grow in confidence and look back on this experience in a positive light”
