Esmée tackles mental health questions
At just 8 years old, Esmée is already making her voice heard with thoughtful questions that are opening up real conversations in football.
Esmée is a participant in Premier League Kicks – a community programme funded by the Premier League Charitable Fund – uses the power of football to inspire young people and create positive change.
Through weekly sessions run by Nottingham Forest Community Trust, Esmée not only develops her skills on the pitch but also builds confidence, communication, and emotional awareness off it.

Recently, Esmée took part in a unique opportunity: interviewing members of Nottingham Forest’s first team. She asked players like Ryan Yates, Jota Silva, Zach Abbott, and Harry Toffolo — who also serves as Nottingham Forest’s Mental Health Ambassador, big questions about mental health like:
- “What helps you feel better when you’re stressed or angry?”
- “Is it okay to take a break when you’re feeling too tired or sad?”
- “How do you manage your feelings?”

Her simple but powerful questions sparked honest reflections from the players and reminded everyone watching that emotional wellbeing matters, no matter your age or profession.
“I wanted to do it because it is helpful to hear how other people feel and look after their own wellbeing,” said Esmée.
“It is important to talk about mental health because it shows it’s okay not to be okay.”
“Sometimes grown-ups don’t talk about feelings, but I think it’s really important – even for footballers.”

Esmée’s participation highlights exactly what Premier League Kicks is all about. The initiative offers free football sessions and educational workshops aimed at improving wellbeing, boosting confidence, and helping young people achieve their potential, both on and off the pitch.
