Bringing Battlefield History to Forest Forces Veterans

Over the past five weeks, Nottingham Forest Community Trust’s Forest Forces veterans have taken a deep dive into history through the Finds Programme, an initiative by Waterloo Uncovered.

Hosted in McGovern’s Lounge at The City Ground, the workshops brought a unique collection of Battle of Waterloo artefacts to Nottingham, giving veterans the chance to explore history, learn key archaeological skills, and engage with local heritage.

Waterloo Uncovered combines world-class archaeology with a programme of care and recovery for Veterans and Serving Military Personnel (VSMP) suffering from some of the physical and mental impacts of their service. Since 2015 the charity has been using archaeology to promote recovery and wellbeing.

At each of the five workshops, veterans worked alongside archaeologists, developing post-excavation skills while handling real battlefield finds. The experience was not just about history—it was about personal discovery, camaraderie, and wellbeing.

Brian Dacunha, Forest Forces Coordinator, said: “It’s been incredible to see our veterans engaging with history in such a hands-on way – strengthening our opportunities and engagement in Forest Forces sessions.

“The Finds Programme has given them the chance to learn new skills, connect with each other, and gain a real sense of achievement, while also bolstering the overall programme—creating more value and touch points for participants.

“We are looking forward to the final showcase, with the veterans being able to proudly share their work with family and friends.”

The initiative will conclude with a public showcase, where veterans presented their findings at a local heritage organisation. This event will celebrate their learning journey and highlighted the importance of history in bringing communities together. This will take place on March 15th at Thoresby Park Courtyard, Nottinghamshire, NG22 9EP at 10:30am until 4pm.

The Forest Forces programme tackles social isolation in veterans by providing a variety of regular activities and events that brings people together from different backgrounds and armed forces communities.

From coffee mornings, comedy nights and day trips, we work with our veterans to come up with different initiatives that everyone will enjoy.

Nottingham Forest Community Trust remain committed to supporting the Armed Forces community.
