Finding Comfort and Connection

The Nottingham Forest Community Trust Memory Club is a guiding light of hope for adults concerned about their memory.

Memory Club is supported by the Premier League and Professional Footballers’ Association. Administered through the Premier League Charitable Fund, the funding helps football clubs to tackle inequality and respond to local challenges, supporting people and their communities to be more inclusive.

Sessions are designed to create a supportive and stimulating environment, the club offers a sanctuary for individuals to engage in activities that enhance memory function while creating social connections

During our visit to a Memory Club session, we had the privilege of speaking with some participants, who shared their heartfelt experiences. One participant who found out about the session through word of mouth; emphasising the club’s growing reputation within the community; says, “Wednesdays are so important to me,” underscoring the club’s role in providing a sense of routine and anticipation. The welcoming nature of the club was a common theme, with participants appreciating the therapeutic atmosphere where they could choose their level of engagement. The informal learning that occurs through conversations with others facing similar challenges was noted as invaluable, significantly boosting participants’ confidence.

We also spoke with a carer who has been attending similar sessions since 2017. For them, the Memory Club is not just a lifeline for the person they care for but also a crucial respite for themselves. The friendly atmosphere and the opportunity to get out of the house are major benefits. The carer found that the sessions brought joy and a much-needed change of routine, so much so that they continued to attend even after being a carer, highlighting the deep social bonds formed within the group. The biggest benefit, according to the carer, is the socialisation aspect, which is therapeutic for both the carer and the participant, offering a sense of community and mutual understanding.

These sessions are a vital resource for those experiencing memory issues and their carers. It provides a safe, welcoming space where individuals can enjoy meaningful interactions, engage in stimulating activities, and find support and friendship, all of which contribute to a better quality of life.
