Forest Hosts Men’s Mental Health Workshop

Nottingham Forest recently teamed up with men’s mental health charity Tough To Talk to deliver a powerful series of workshops at The City Ground as part of Men’s Mental Health Month.

Tough To Talk works to break the silence around male suicide and encourage open, honest conversations. Their sessions gave attendees valuable insights into lived experiences, key statistics, and the reasons behind mental health struggles, while offering practical tools to help spot the signs in friends, colleagues, and family.

The workshops offered attendees a deep dive into vital areas:

  • Honest Lived Experiences: Sharing real, personal stories to humanise the struggles faced by many men.
  • Key Statistics: Gaining crucial insight into the scale and reality of men’s mental health challenges.
  • Understanding the ‘Why’: Exploring how and why mental health struggles occur in the first place.
  • Practical Tools: Learning to effectively hear, see, and know the signs of struggle in colleagues, friends, and family.

A key takeaway for all attendees was the confidence and practical ability to offer meaningful support. The sessions were designed to empower individuals, regardless of professional background to step up and play a supportive role. The open Q&A sessions created a safe space for questions, ensuring everyone left feeling better equipped to start the conversations that truly matter.

Nottingham Forest Community Trust is proud to stand with Tough To Talk in this essential mission, highlighting the importance of mental fitness alongside physical health for the entire community.

Steve Whittle, Tough to Talk Founder, said: “At Tough To Talk, we believe that breaking the silence around men’s mental health and thoughts of suicide is not just important – it’s essential. Partnering with Nottingham Forest to deliver these workshops has been a powerful step in creating a culture where it’s okay to talk and vital to listen.

“What makes this collaboration so impactful is the shared commitment to meeting men where they are – in male-centric spaces like football – rather than waiting for them to come to us. By bringing these conversations to The City Ground, we’ve equipped participants with the tools and confidence to support those who may be struggling. Mental health matters, and conversations like these can truly save lives.”

While the event provided crucial tools and awareness, the conversation doesn’t end here. Nottingham Forest is committed to supporting our community beyond the workshop doors. We encourage anyone needing to talk or seeking ongoing support to reach out to local mental health services.

Colin Eley, Health and Wellbeing Manager at Nottingham Forest Community Trust, said: “Hosting Tough To Talk during Men’s Mental Health Month is a critical step in fulfilling our commitment to the wellbeing of our staff and the wider community.

“This workshop isn’t just about listening; it’s about providing practical, life-changing tools that empower our people to spot the signs of struggle and step in with confidence. We want to ensure that the message is clear: it is never ‘Tricky to Talk’ when you’re here, and help is always available.”

Furthermore, the club’s own dedicated support initiative, Tricky to Talk, which provides a safe and supportive environment for the local community to connect and share. By utilising these local resources, we can all contribute to a community where reaching out is the norm, not the exception.
