Inspiring Young Readers
On Monday, Nottingham Forest Community Trust, in partnership with the Literacy Trust, hosted an exciting Premier League Reading Stars event as part of a Collapsed Curriculum Day. Pupils from Claremont Primary and Milford Academy came together for a day focused on improving literacy through the world of football.
The highlight of the event was a visit from Seth Burkett, author of Boy in Brazil, who led interactive sessions with the pupils. Burkett shared his personal journey as a writer, encouraging the children to explore their own storytelling abilities and promoting a love for reading and writing. His talk, which drew on his experiences both as an author and a former footballer, was an engaging way to show pupils the power of words.
Tom Norton, Schools Manager at Nottingham Forest Community Trust, said: “The Premier League Reading Stars programme is all about making reading enjoyable and relatable for young people. Events like this help us inspire pupils to engage with books in a way that connects with their passion for football. Having Seth Burkett here to share his experiences has been a fantastic way to show the pupils that reading and writing can be just as exciting as one of their favourite sports.”
Premier League Reading Stars
Developed by the National Literacy Trust, Premier League Reading Stars is an evidence-based reading programme aimed at children who may not typically enjoy reading but have a love for football. The programme helps pupils engage with a wide range of reading materials about the sport they love, creating both a passion for reading and improving their literacy skills.
Premier League Reading Stars is delivered free of charge in partnership with the Premier League and is part of the wider Premier League Primary Stars initiative. Teachers who sign up to participate in the programme receive access to special resources and incentives, helping schools deliver reading sessions that are both fun and impactful.
This special Collapsed Curriculum Day allowed pupils from Claremont Primary and Milford Academy to dedicate their time to this enriching literacy event. Nottingham Forest Community Trust continues to play a vital role in the community by supporting educational initiatives like Premier League Reading Stars, helping to inspire and empower young readers.
