Strengthening Mental Health Support in Nottinghamshire

The Nottingham Forest Community Trust Health & Wellbeing team hosted a mental health discussion event at The City Ground, providing an opportunity for organisations across Nottinghamshire to connect, share insights, and explore ways to enhance mental health support in the region.

Bringing together key community partners, service users, stakeholders and Nottingham Forest Community Trust’s mental health ambassador, Harry Toffolo. The event facilitated discussions on strengthening collaboration and ensuring wider access to mental wellbeing services.

Tricky to Talk is an established programme run by Nottingham Forest Community Trust (NFCT), reinforcing the Trust’s mission to place health and wellbeing at the core of its work.

Nottingham Forest F.C., alongside its Community Trust, recognises the power of football can open conversations, reduce stigma, and signpost individuals to vital mental health services.

The club’s crest carries a unique level of trust and recognition within the community, making Tricky to Talk an accessible initiative for those in need of support.

This event was designed to bring together service users, beneficiaries, and key community partners to encourage collaboration and share knowledge about mental health services in Nottinghamshire.

The gathering aimed to strengthen community engagement and expand the reach of Tricky to Talk, ensuring more people have access to the support they need.

Attendees were provided with an update on how the programme will continue to grow and develop, as well as opportunities to connect with local organisations.

The event also featured insightful discussions with partners already working alongside NFCT, showcasing the breadth of mental health services available.

A highlight of the event was a special Q&A session with Nottingham Forest player and NFCT Mental Health Ambassador, Harry Toffolo, reinforcing the importance of open dialogue around mental health.

With this event setting the foundation for future collaboration, Tricky to Talk will continue to expand its reach through ongoing initiatives:

Tricky Hubs: Monthly face-to-face and online support meetings featuring practical workshops, guest speakers, and strategies for managing stress and anxiety.

Mental Health Awareness Week (12th-18th May): Building on the momentum from this event to deliver impactful activities that further promote mental wellbeing.

Wellness Walks in May (National Walking Month): Encouraging physical activity as a means of improving mental health.

Clare Adams from Double Impact commented: “The work Nottingham Forest Community Trust complete with community partners is very impressive.

“The talk from Harry Toffolo was inspiring, such a great insight into a premier league professionals perspective of vulnerability and mental health.

“The event was great for networking too, which is always important to find new gems of organisations to collaborate with.

“I had some excellent conversations with individuals from Nigel from your team, Bottled Up Blokes, Tough to Talk and Men’s Gardening Club.”

Steve Whittle, Founder of Tough to Talk added: “Thank you for organising the event, it was fantastic.

“I’m proud to be working alongside you and was genuinely inspired by your comments about the power behind the badge.

“I believe Tough To Talk has the potential to make a real impact in supporting the men in your community, and I’m excited about the work we can do together.”

Nottingham Forest Community Trust remains dedicated to championing mental health initiatives and creating a supportive network for those in need. As Tricky to Talk looks to grow, its impact within the Nottinghamshire community will only strengthen, ensuring that more people feel empowered to seek support and speak openly about their mental health.
