Reading Stars Helps Joseph Shine

Crabtree Primary School pupil Joseph has made impressive progress in reading, thanks to the support of Nottingham Forest Community Trust through its delivery of the Premier League Primary Stars Reading Stars programme.

Reading Stars, funded by the Premier League Charitable Fund, plays a key role in the Premier League Primary Stars programme, helping children build both confidence and ability in reading.

When Joseph first joined the sessions, he found reading difficult.

With SATs on the horizon, it had become a real struggle – not just in terms of skill, but also in confidence. The Reading Stars programme, led by Nottingham Forest Community Trust, gave him the boost he needed.

Joseph started working with Harry, a dedicated coach from the Community Trust, who quickly made reading feel different. Harry tailored the lessons around Joseph’s interests – especially football – making them fun, engaging, and relevant.

“It’s not boring like with teachers before,” said Joseph.

“Harry listens and helps me feel more confident.”

Together, they tackled key reading skills like skimming and scanning, preparing Joseph for the types of questions he’d face in his SATs.

But more importantly, they worked on building Joseph’s love for reading.

Joseph’s progress has been clear and encouraging. He has moved up two book bands and is now just two away from the top level. His mock SATs reading score has improved significantly, reflecting stronger comprehension and better test technique.

This progress in reading has had a ripple effect, boosting his performance in maths, grammar, and literacy.

He’s now reading more regularly at home – often a few pages each night with his parents, sometimes even from the Bible.

Reading newspaper articles and books like You Are a Champion by Marcus Rashford has helped spark Joseph’s imagination and build his confidence.

“That book inspired me because it’s about overcoming challenges,” Joseph said.

Joseph is now more engaged in class, regularly contributes to group discussions, and has even formed closer friendships as a result of being part of the reading group.

“I don’t think I would’ve passed my mock reading test without Harry’s help,” he said.

“He makes reading fun – not boring like it used to be.”
