Lynn’s Story: Finding Connection, Confidence and Community

As part of the Inside Matters campaign, we’re spotlighting Lynn’s story, a powerful example of how the Premier League and Professional Footballers’ Association Players’ Fund transforms lives

After experiencing a period of profound personal hardship, Lynn describes herself as being ‘in a dark place’, struggling with grief, isolation and a lack of direction. Having recently lost her father and without a stable place to call home, she felt disconnected and unsure how to move forward.

“I was very sad, very emotional, very tearful,” she recalls. “I just felt really, really lost.”

It was her daughter, Emily, who encouraged her to try something new – suggesting she attend Healthy Horizons, a session run by Nottingham Forest Community Trust and made possible by the Premier League and Professional Footballers’ Association Players’ Fund. That decision would prove pivotal.

For Lynn, walking through those doors marked the beginning of a life-changing journey – one that has led to her rebuilding her confidence, improving her health and rediscovering a sense of belonging.

From the moment she arrived, Lynn felt a shift.

“Nottingham Forest staff were there and they gave me a wave,” she says. “From that moment, everything I came in with left. I felt a connection to something.”

Programmes such as this, made possible by the Premier League and PFA Players’ Fund, provide a safe, welcoming space where participants can focus on both their physical and mental wellbeing.

For Lynn, that environment became a foundation for change.

Initially hesitant to engage, Lynn began attending regularly and slowly started to take part in activities. With encouragement from the Nottingham Forest Community Trust’s staff, she began exercising in the gym and trying new things.

“She didn’t really engage with people at first,” explains Ian Richardson, health and wellbeing co-ordinator at Nottingham Forest Community Trust. “But we got her involved in the gym doing exercises and she’s come on leaps and bounds.”

Alongside physical activity, Lynn was introduced to nutritional and cookery sessions –  another key step in her transformation. At the start of the programme, her diet had been limited but she gradually began exploring healthier choices and developing new skills.

What was once a reliance on sweets and chocolate has evolved into balanced, home-cooked meals, including dishes she now takes pride in preparing.

“I refused to eat anything at one point,” she explains. “But looking at my food diary now compared to the beginning – it’s completely different.”

As her confidence grew, so too did Lynn’s creativity. Channeling her newfound self-belief, she reignited her passion for designing and making clothes – something that has since become a powerful expression of her identity.

“I get stopped and people ask where my clothes are from,” she says. “I tell them I made them. They ask if I sell them but I say no – there’s only me that has them. That makes me an individual.”

This rediscovery of individuality and purpose is something those around her have noticed.

“She has changed,” says Emily. “She’s found who she is and what she likes. The confidence she’s gained and the things she does now – it’s really good to see.”

Lynn describes days before joining the programme that were filled with distress, often calling her daughter in tears and unsure how to cope. Now, she reflects on how far she has come.

“All the issues I had before, I can deal with,” she says. “In my mind, I can hear what the group leaders would say to me and that helps me.”

Her journey highlights the wider impact of Premier League-funded community programmes, which aim not only to improve physical health but also to strengthen mental resilience and social connection.

“The Premier League and PFA make this programme possible, and that is transformative,” said Dr Nigel Plant, wellbeing practitioner at Nottingham Forest Community Trust. “It allows us to create that sense of community.”

Today, Lynn is passionate about encouraging others who may be facing similar challenges to take that first step.

“It’s been life-changing,” she says. “I would say to anybody, ‘walk through that door and you will see your journey begin, just as mine did.’”

Lynn’s story is a powerful reminder of the role football can play far beyond the pitch – bringing people together, offering support when it is needed most and helping individuals rediscover hope, purpose and belonging.

Administered through the Premier League Foundation, the Premier League and Professional Footballers’ Association Players’ Fund helps football clubs to tackle inequality and respond to local challenges, supporting people and their communities to be more inclusive.
